Finance Consultant vs Bank or NBFC: What Is the Difference?

Understanding what each party actually does — and doesn't do — avoids confusion later in the process.

Two different roles, often confused

A bank or NBFC lends money directly — it's the party that ultimately sanctions, disburses and prices a facility, based on its own policies and independent assessment. A finance consultancy plays a different role: understanding a requirement, coordinating an enquiry, and where appropriate, connecting a business with potentially relevant institutions or professionals.

What a finance consultancy generally does

  • Reviews the requirement and helps identify which type of financing or professional route may be relevant
  • Coordinates the enquiry and organises the information a lender or investor is likely to need
  • Where appropriate, arranges introductions to potentially relevant banks, NBFCs, lenders, investors or professionals
  • Helps coordinate communication during the initial enquiry stage

What a finance consultancy does not do

It doesn't lend its own funds, sanction or disburse loans, set interest rates or loan terms, make investment decisions, provide legal or tax opinions, or guarantee any funding, investment or transaction outcome. Those decisions and terms are determined entirely by the relevant institution or counterparty, based on its own independent assessment.

Why this distinction matters practically

Understanding this division of roles sets realistic expectations from the outset — an introduction is a starting point for a conversation with the actual decision-maker, not an approval or a guarantee. It also clarifies where questions about eligibility, pricing or terms should ultimately be directed: to the institution making the decision, not the party that facilitated the introduction.

Why use a consultant at all, then?

The value generally lies in coordination and reach — identifying which of many potential institutions, investors or professionals might actually be relevant to a specific, sometimes non-standard requirement, rather than the borrower approaching each one individually and starting the explanation from scratch every time.
